The best thing you can do is to research on online forums and on the snowboarding social network. The members here should put you in the right direction.

They are easily 20+ types of snow boards on the market, so this list should help you narrow down your choice.

There are plenty of sites online which provides reviews and ratings for all types of snow boards.

The different types of board categories can range from:

- Freeride boards,
- Freestyle boards,
- Backcountry boards,
- Park/Pipe boards,
- Kids boards,
- Women's boards,
- Boardercross boards,

From the above list you can see that you have many categories to choose from.

You really need to have a think about you preferences in advance of chatting to the sales person.

You will be asked questions such as:

- Your height,
- Weight,
- Riding Style,
- Foot size,

The above key questions will determine the width, shape, stiffness and height of the board you are going to buy.

There are a few other factors to be aware about but here I will focus on your riding style and riding ability.

Riding style will most determine the type of board you are going to buy in the end.

There are many opinions on riding style but I will list three main categories.

All Mountain & Freeride style (all mountain snowboarder)

All Mountain & Freeride style basically says it all in the heading, as a snowboarder, the snowboarder will make use of the entire mountain, catching air, carving a turn on slopes.

It's the sense of freedom and flight when catching big air jumps. Sliding on fresh snow at speeds of no limit. Freeride is the best way to explain this.

Freestyle or Technical riding

Freestyle or Technical riding is for those who prefer Jumps, Rail Sliding, Grabs, Jibbing, Trick Riding and Spins.

Technical riding is normally set up in the parks or near the half pipe. This type of snowboarding is very popular amongst the younger snowboarders as they are coming up from BMX riding, or skateboarding.

This type of snowboarding is also very sociable with many competitions among your friends.

If you are a beginner snowboarder this style is probably the most popular.

Carve/Alpine style

Carve/Alpine style snowboarding is all about speed and deep turning. These types of snowboarders are always well known for the carve they leave behind in the snow.

Carve/Alpine style snowboarders make the most out of what the mountain throws at them. Expert skiers who are taking up snowboarding tend to pick this style, as they like the performance of the carving boards. However these types of boards are not recommended for beginners.

Alpine style riders are nearly always attached to the snow.

Quick Tips when buying a Snowboard

1. Know what type of snow you will be riding in, if its powder snow a soft board is better. If you are riding in hard and ice snow, then you need a stiffer board.

2. Look for a board that suits you and not a board because of the brand

3. Again as I mentioned above choose your riding style.

4. Always check before you buy boots that they are compatible with your board. Not every board is suitable to all boots.

5. Wear boots that fit, make sure the calf of your foot fits nicely within the boot and that your toes are not crushed.
